The Art of Life

“Despite its continual attention to cure when cure is needed, Ayurveda always emphasizes prevention over cure. Ayurveda balances and rejuvenates living organisms, reducing their susceptibility and empowering their immunity to prevent new disease from developing. Ayurveda is more a way of life, a way of learning how to cooperate with Nature and live in harmony with Her, than it is a medical system. Health in Ayurveda means harmony, and there is really no limit to the degree of balance that a sincere harmony-seeker can achieve”  – taken from Prakriti: Your AyurVedic Constitution by Dr. Robert Svoboda

In short, ayurveda is the oldest, longest continually practiced medicine on the planet. It is also the most widely practiced medicine. It is ancient yet timeless; a tried and true method for creating and sustaining balance. Few know that for thousands of years ayurveda has offered people surgery, dentistry, toxicology, pediatrics etc as well as freedom. The word itself is translated as “the truth of life”. Life is everything and everything is life. Ayurveda shows us that what we think, how we relate, who we relate with, our emotions, our professions, our habits, beliefs and “shoulds” blend together and become us. With this awareness we can transform our life into the life we WANT to be living. After all, it is ours!

The Basic Principles Of Ayurveda

In order to maintain life on Earth we must observe natural law.  One of those laws is; we are the microcosm of the macrocosm. Human bodies are made of the exact same molecules as the earth’s body. Ayurveda recognizes that in simply living within the laws and rhythms of Nature we naturally flow down stream instead of struggling against the current. Sure we can go outside in a snow storm wearing a bikini but no one wants to do that.  Oddly, unconsciously, we go against nature regularly as most are not in right relationship with the rhythms of their bodies (microcosm) or the planet (macrocosm).

The next principle is everything  is made up of the 5 elements. Earth, Water, Fire, Air and Ether/Space are THE building blocks to everything. Everything has a unique ratio or proportion of the 5 elements. Intrinsic to the elements are characteristics IE: water is naturally wet, fire naturally hot and air is naturally drying.

The next principle; Earth is a polarity planet. For every up there is a down, for every negative there is a positive, for every day there is a night etc. Apply your high school physics class here.

In combining these principles we understand that we must cooperate with Nature to thrive as we are made of the same stuff. This stuff has defining qualities that expresses itself positively or negatively. The elements themselves are neutral. The elements “just are as they are”. But as they take on an expression they enter duality. IE: water it’s essential to life. Hence water is essential to lung health but when the water within the lungs becomes diseased the lungs are said to have pneumonia.
